John Deere 35G Mini Excavator, 500 Hour Service Interval Tasks – Part 3
Written by Luis Montes Updated On March 05, 2026

Previously, we covered replacing the engine oil and filter on a John Deere 35G.
In this article, we’ll explain how to change the final fuel filter (last filter before fuel enters the engine’s high-pressure systems) as part of the 500 hour periodic maintenance tasks.
On the Tekamo HD YouTube channel, you can watch Keith, an expert heavy-duty mechanic, replace the filter.

Replace the Old Fuel Filter

As shown in the image above, the fuel filter is in the engine bay. Keith chose a pair of filter pliers to loosen and remove the fuel filter. However, a strap wrench or a water pump pliers will also work.
Turn the filter clockwise to loosen it, but don’t remove it yet. Place a catch pan underneath it for the fuel that will leak once you take it out.

No matter the filter you need to change, compare the new filter with the old one to ensure it’ll fit correctly. In this case, check the length, overall diameter, and seal and thread diameters. We recommend verifying whether you plan to use an OEM or an aftermarket part.
Make sure to lubricate the filter’s seal. The OEM filter we used included some lubrication. If there’s not, rub the seal with a bit of fuel from the old filter. A dry seal could bite and twist as you install the filter, leading to an improper seal.
Reinstall the filter by hand, tightening it as much as you can. Using a tool often leads to overtightening and damage to the threads or the seal, resulting in leaks.

Prime the New Fuel Filter

You may have seen people filling the filter with fuel before installation. It’s called priming and prevents air from entering the fuel system, which can cause difficult starting and engine stalling. However, the 35G has an electric fuel pump to bleed the air from the fuel system.
So it’s perfectly fine to put the fuel filter empty, then turn the key on to prime it.
To prime the fuel filter, turn the key switch to the ON position for 10 to 15 seconds. The electric fuel solenoid pump will start to bleed air. Wait 30 seconds before trying to start the engine. If the engine does not start, repeat the procedure.
