CAT 314E Engine Oil Change & Other Routine Maintenance Tasks – Part 6

A heavy-duty mechanic greases the stick on a CAT 314E excavator

In part 5 of this series, we showed you how to check and change the final drive oil on the CAT 314E.

The final task to complete this routine maintenance series will be servicing the grease fittings of the CAT 314E excavator.

There’s also a video version of this task on the Tekamo HD YouTube channel. Check it out.

If you don’t have the time to perform the service yourself or want to enroll in a preventative maintenance program for your heavy equipment, contact Tekamo HD to schedule a heavy-duty mechanic.

Recommendation From an Expert HD Technician

Keith, the expert heavy equipment technician who serviced the CAT 314E, doesn’t recommend a lever-style manual pump. You can use it. However, it will start to get hard on the hands.

There are several grease fittings around the excavator, so using an electric or air pump is best.

CAT 314E Grease Fittings Location

As a general reference, any moving point has a grease nipple (arms, bucket, pins, cylinders).

Proper Way to Service the Grease Zerks

Wipe off the ends of the grease zerks to prevent contaminants from entering the system.

Pump grease until you see it coming out from the joints.

The hydraulic cylinder zerks at the top of the boom and stick are tough to see while pumping grease. According to Keith, it’s better to see grease coming out from the top of those cylinders, even if that means a bit of a mess, rather than not seeing any grease and risking premature wear on the pins and bushings.
